Cosmeceuticals are active but are they always safe?

Cosmeceuticals use ingredients with smaller molecular structures and better penetrator enhancers than those used in cosmetics. That’s why they have an active effect on the way living cells function. You can buy cosmeceuticals without a prescription but it doesn’t mean that they are always safe for you to use. They are still more powerful than cosmetics and you better get them after consulting with a specialised aesthetician.

What makes a skincare product safe?

Apart from not causing irritation on your skin, you must bear in mind that any substance that goes on your skin will penetrate your body and eventually circulate in your blood. Chemicals such as parabens and sulfates are two examples of substances that have been used widely in personal care products for years without a warning about their effects on human physiology. Parabens prevent the growth of microbes in the moist environment of a bathroom and Sulfates are effective cleansing and foaming agents. There are other ingredients that can be used to replace them, creating the “paraben and sulfate-free” trends.

Is paraben-free safe enough?

Not all paraben-free products are safe. Parabens could be replaced by other chemicals that are also potentially harmful. The safe route would be to use natural substances that prevent the growth of mould and bacteria in personal care products. There is a range of essential oils and extracts from different parts of various plants that have antimicrobial properties.
